Timber Chapter

Membership into the IBHS Timber Chapter of National Honor Society is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the Faculty Council. It carries a responsibility to the chapter which embodies the recommended standards set by the National Honor Society on success in the field of academics as well as those personifying the highest standards of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. Membership is a privilege, not a right, that a student acquires and has to maintain at all times.

Eligibility Requirements

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who meet the scholarship requirement for membership outlined by the Timber Chapter by-laws are invited to apply for membership. Once invited, those who are interested in becoming a member of the need to complete an Application for Consideration and follow the detailed guidelines by the due date given by the adviser.
It is only through majority vote from the Faculty Council that an applicant is offered membership and inducted  into the Timber Chapter.

CHARACTER

Eligible students will be evaluated by the faculty and administration according to the National Honor Society standards for good character. The standard of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.

LEADERSHIP

Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. 
A leadership position requires that the student be responsible for overseeing a group of people. Leadership in organizations outside of the school may count towards this requirement upon approval from the principal and advisor.
The Timber Chapter of NHS requires that each student hold leadership positions  while in high school.


SCHOLARSHIP

Students are eligible to apply for NHS membership if they demonstrate academic achievement through their cumulative grade point average.
The Timber Chapter of NHS requires members to maintain an GPA of 3.50. Falling below this required grade point average may result in dismissal from NHS. Grade point averages will be checked after each semester.

SERVICE

The Timber Chapter of NHS requires members to participate in a variety of IBHS activities and thru voluntary services within the community. ​

Understanding the Obligations of Membership

Students who accept membership and are inducted into the Timber Chapter of NHS should be aware of the time and commitment involved with this honor. For example, there are mandatory chapter meetings and obligations, the cost for a NHS shirt and yearly chapter dues. Members must also participate in chapter and individual service activity projects and extra-curricular activities to benefit the school and community. The Timber Chapter of NHS requires members to maintain a certain number of service and activity points, and to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.50. 
  • Activity points are awarded to students based on a leader or member rolls in various IBHS extra-curricular activities. No more than two points will be awarded per academic year for any one IBHS sport or activity. Members of musical ensembles who receive course credit may only earn points for contests towards their IBHS activity points.
  • Service to the community or within the school involves voluntary contributions done without compensation to the student. One service point will be awarded for each service project completed. Service projects need a minimum of 2 hours of documented work to be eligible for points.
  • Both Activity and Service points require documentation and verification from the sponsor/coach for which the NHS member is involved.

Candidate Requirements

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who meet the scholarship requirement of 3.50 or above will be notified and granted the opportunity to apply for consideration for membership to the Timber Chapter of National Honor Society. 
The NHS Application for consideration must be completed in its entirety and submitted by [time] on [date]. Incomplete or late applications will be considered invalid and not be used for selection.
